Peters makes Cup team

Northampton High School softball catcher, Hannah Peters, had plenty of reasons to try out for the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup Softball team last month.

"I knew a couple girls who were on it before, and they said it was a good time. It was a good experience to go to Philly, and it's important to me to expand my comfort zone," Peters said.

The 28th Annual Howard E. Deppe All-Star Baseball Classic was played Saturday, June 1, at Limeport Stadium, with a team comprised primarily of players from the Lehigh Valley Conference (the red team) downing a team assembled generally from teams in the Colonial League (the blue team) 11-4.

The NY/NJ Comets are kicking off their inaugural season this month as the newest member of National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), and the only member of NPF in the entire Northeast. The Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team is set to take the field next week when they open up tournament play and seek their fourth championship in their 21st campaign.

The franchise is set to take the field June 17 at 12:30 pm against Delaware-South at Ashburn Field in FDR Park in Philadelphia.

A victory next Monday would land them with a contest against either Olympic-Colonial or Suburban One National-Bicentennial on June 21 at 9:30 am at Ashburn Field.

A great season came to an end on Monday for Northampton's softball team.

The Konkrete Kids gained Northampton's first District 11 4A championship since 1996 last Thursday with a 3-0 victory over Liberty.

But, the Kids' season ended Monday at the same Patriot's Park field when District 1's North Penn Maidens took a 1-0 win on Jackie Bilotti's one-hitter.

The Northampton girls softball team captured the District 11 4A title with a win over Liberty at Patriots Park in Allentown on Thursday night. The Kids won 3-0 behind another shutout from pitcher Marly Laubach, her 14th of the season, while she recorded her 22nd win of the year.

The Lehigh Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference announced their scholar athletes last month at Moravian College.

Every varsity sport over the year was represented, as 23 student-athletes took home the prestigious honor to represent their sport for excellence on the field and in the classroom.

Bethlehem Catholic's Bridget Smith was the only representative to take home two awards during the morning ceremony, as she won honors in girls' soccer and girls' basketball.

With both the boys and girls soccer seasons in the fall for the first time this year, the 32nd Annual Lions All-Star Soccer Classic was played nearly six months after the final kick for many of these local high school area players.

The Mountain Valley Conference/Colonial League boys gave up three goals in losing 3-0 to the Lehigh Valley Conference all-stars. The girls teams tied 2-2 in a rain shortened game. Both games were played last Sunday afternoon at Whitehall High School.
