Kunkel paces Kids

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Northampton head coach Mick Sugra has been waiting for his team to put together a sense of consistency, as his club has hovered around the .500 mark all season.

He also has been waiting for one of his pitcher to provide a complement to senior Garrett Kunkel, who has been a mainstay on the mound all season.

Kunkel provided another solid outing Monday afternoon when he scattered seven hits and struck out six in his team's 4-1 victory over Allentown Central Catholic that lifted...

Kids keep it going

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Northampton kept their hot streak going again on Tuesday night, sweeping Nazareth in three games by a 25-17, 25-19, 25-11 margin.

It was the fourth straight win for the K-Kids, who upped their season mark to 8-3 and positioned themselves in the fourth spot of the District 11 3A postseason standings.

Following last week's victory over Becahi, which may have been the biggest upset on paper ever in the Lehigh Valley Conference, the Kids mentality hasn't change.

A runaway victory, a no-hitter, another shutout, and a solid win.

That tells the story of unbeaten Northampton's softball fortune this past week.

The Konkrete Kids, now 14-0 overall with eight Lehigh Valley Conference wins and six nonleague decisions, head into the homestretch with visions of an unbeaten season.

"The girls are kind of tired, but they're pushing harder to move forward," said Coach Sally Whittaker-Kahan. "We have six tough foes ahead of us and four of them...

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Four years ago, Jennifer Perry decided to decided to follow in the footsteps of her elder sister, Caitlyn, who graduated from the Northampton program two years ago.

Now, as a senior, the younger Perry has been blazing a trail of her own as she has best her personal best (PB) times in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs this season.

"I basically got involved because my sister was on the team," stated Jennifer. "But I have always enjoyed running. I figured I would try it. By the end...

District 11 playoffs gets sponsors

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in Sports

For the past three seasons, District 11 has held their baseball championships at Coca-Cola Park, home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. It's return for 2013 was in jeopardy after the district had to pick up the full $8,000.00 cost for the use of the stadium last season when their previous sponsorship from Coca-Cola ended following the 2011 tournament. Fortunately, two new sponsors have stepped up to pick up half of the tab for this year's cost, allowing District 11 to return to the premier...

Schoenberger 3rd

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 by MIKE HAINES in Sports

Josh Schoenberger made two previous trips to the Lehigh Valley Conference Tennis Tournament and came away empty handed each time.

Monday, the Northampton senior had his best showing in his final appearance at the event, taking third place at No. 2 singles for his first career medal.

"I went further than I thought I would," he said. "I was hitting a better forehand. I wasn't hitting it out of bounds. I kept the ball in play and took care of key points."

Schoenberger, the...

Boys get some key wins

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Northampton head baseball coach Mick Sugra knows his team not only got a big lift with their improving pitching in two recent wins, but they also possibly rid themselves of a mental block along the way.

The Kids ended last week with a 7-6 win over Dieruff and also a 4-2 win over Nazareth that proved to be as therapeutic as anything to their cause. Nazareth has been a major pothole in the Kids' road to success in their Lehigh Valley Conference play and other factors through the years...

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Through his first three years, Northampton's Kory DeCesaris has enjoyed his share of big moments in the school track and field program. He also had garnered his share of being in the spotlight as a goalie on the boys' soccer team the past four seasons.

With his athletic career in its final stage, DeCesaris is focused on achieving a milestone that has eluded him as his sights are set for a performance on his final stage later this season - advancing to the PIAA state track meet.
