Tennis team closing in on a great season

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 by WENDY KENNEDY Special to the Press in Sports

The Northampton varsity tennis team is winding down their 2014 season with a string of wins that has surpassed head coach Kim Davis' expectations.

"The season has turned out to be a very pleasant surprise," said Davis. "Preseason, I thought four total wins would be a good season."

But, the team is currently 7-6 and still very much alive as a District 11 team tournament hopeful.

On Monday, April 21, the team traveled to Pocono Mountain West and came away with another...

Atlantic sturgeon found on banks in Easton

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

Despite the monsoon we had last week, local creeks have receded somewhat and are fishing fairly good for trout according to our local tackle shop reporters. If anything, the high water from the rains may have moved the trout around somewhat.

And if there was an unusual happening last week, it was the discovery of a 75-inch mature adult Atlantic sturgeon along the banks of the Delaware River in the Easton area. The find, by a local landowner, was deemed a rarity because sturgeon's are...

Luberti making presence known

Wednesday, April 16, 2014 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Ian Luberti is living his dream.

A few years ago, Luberti began watching recent graduate Cody Kramer play with the varsity program. Last season, Luberti had the opportunity to serve as the K-Kids' backup catcher as a freshman behind Kramer.

This season, he has taken over the reins from his self-proclaimed hero.

"When I was younger, I never really tried to be like any professional player," noted Luberti. "Instead, I would always watch the high school teams play and I...

Softball presses on after a tough loss

Wednesday, April 16, 2014 by GEORGE GEIGER Special to the Press in Sports

There were good things - and bad things - that happened to Northampton's softball team last week.

But, coach Kevin Mann says his girls are "resilient and ready to play every day."

The Konkrete Kids knocked off defending, Lehigh Valley Conference champion Bethlehem Catholic 3-1 last Thursday behind Gillian Muthard's four-hit pitching performance, and two hits and an RBI each from Bri Dalton and Hannah Peters.

Then came the downs just as the Kids lost 5-3 to Emmaus at...

In like a Nittany Lion Former Northampton pitcher Marly Laubach now leading the Penn State softball team

Wednesday, April 16, 2014 by SCOTT PAGEL in Sports

ast year at this time, Northampton pitcher Marly Laubach was mowing down Lehigh Valley Conference batters on her way to helping the Kids to a District 11 title. She was also about to cement her name in the team record book in several categories.

Fast forward to this year, and Laubach is now the ace of the Penn State University softball team.

Her final destination, however, wasn't always clear. Laubach made the team as a preferred walk-on freshman, but she took the opportunity...

Holihan paces Kids

Wednesday, April 16, 2014 by WENDY KENNEDY Special to the Press in Sports

The Northampton boys volleyball team, led by senior Mike Holihan, has been racking up the wins across the conference this month.

Winners of five of their last six contests, and four straight league matches, Northampton is steadily working toward what head coach Doug Fehnel set as his expectations for the team this year: league and district playoffs.

While Fehnel has maintained a strong focus on building the defense of the team this season, Northampton's ability to put points on...

LVU accepted into US Soccer Academy

Wednesday, April 16, 2014 by PETER CAR in Sports

Greg Ramos had been applying since 2008 to get Lehigh Valley United acceptance into U.S. Soccer's development academy.

On April 1, the region's top youth soccer club finally became a member of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy for the U-14 age group of players born in 2000 and 2001.

For Ramos, the Executive Director of Soccer Operations at LVU, the news came on April Fools Day, but he was pretty sure it wasn't a joke when he got the call.

"I was in contact with U.S....

Flying High Allison Horn happy to be on track team

Thursday, April 10, 2014 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

For Allison Horn, her past two years have been pretty hectic.

Due to a sport switching seasons, Horn has been able to participate in two sports she truly loves. With the switch of girls soccer to the fall season in her junior year, Horn finally had the opportunity to join the school's track team, a chance she has longed for quite some time.

And she didn't waste any time expressing her gratitude. Horn missed making a trip to states in the hurdles last year by two-hundredths of a...

Lacrosse goals differ with season under way

Thursday, April 10, 2014 by PETER CAR in Sports

Northampton's lacrosse programs don't have any victories between the boys and girls sides this spring, but that doesn't really matter at this point.

As boys' head coach Joe Engleby would tell you, it's not about wins and losses, but more about development.

That's the scenario both programs are going through this spring, as they've taken players, most of which have only played the sport for just over a month, and transformed them into a playing product on the field.
