LV Sportsman's Show to make its debut

Wednesday, February 13, 2013 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

With the Harrisburg outdoor sports show cancelled for this year, local sportsmen who don't relish driving to Oaks for the upcoming Philly Outdoor Sports Show can take in a more condensed version when the Lehigh Valley Sportsman's Show makes its debut on March 2.

The two-day show (Mar. 2-3) will open at Allentown's Agri-Plex Expo Center (Ag Hall) where it was last held back in 2001 when Dick Laros, former Allentown taxidermist, ran it for many years. Prior to that, the show was...

They're in! Girls upset Parkland, clinch a district berth

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by GEORGE GEIGER Special to the Press in Sports

Jeff Jacksits said his team "got to believe in themselves" - and his girls sure do.

Northampton knocked off Parkland 42-35 Tuesday night and not only did the Kids win their sixth-straight game, but also clinched a berth in the District 11 Class 4A girls basketball tournament.

Northampton boosted its record to 7-6 in the Lehigh Valley Conference and 10-11 with one game remaining-Friday at Nazareth.

The Kids, who seemed "as good as dead" as far as playoffs are concerned,...

Boys continue to build toward future

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Northampton's Coy Stampone knew it would take time.

The first-year head coach hasn't been totally surprised with his team's season despite their 2-17 record beginning this week. The Konkrete Kids lost two leading seniors from last year's team, and then began with a number of first-year varsity players.

They also didn't have the services of senior center Derek Kulp until just after Christmas as the 6-foot-7 post player recovered from an ACL injury.

"I knew this would be a...

Kids avenge EHS loss

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Northampton barely qualified for the District 11 team wrestling tournament last weekend at Freedom High School, but that didn't diminish their mindset.

The Kids got some revenge in their opening bout against Emmaus, but fell to eventual champion Easton in the quarterfinals to give head coach Seth Lisa a mixed bag of results during Friday's action.

However, it was an experience that this young Northampton team can build from as they move forward into the individual postseason,...

Kids knock off Emmaus

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

The Northampton hockey team has stumbled a bit lately, losing two-straight, and the Kids haven't won since a 7-4 decision on Jan. 4, over Easton.

But, Daniel Farkas broke free from the pack and scored what proved to be the game-winner in a hard-ought, penalty-laden, 3-2 Northampton win Monday night at Lehigh Valley Ice Arena over Emmaus.

Just 33 seconds after Emmaus (10-3-2) tied the game at 2-2, Farkas ruined the Hornets celebration by using his speed to fly down ice on a pass...

The Northampton swim teams fell to Whitehall in a meet from last week.

Girls making a run Team knocks off LHS, needs three wins

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by GEORGE GEIGER Special to the Press in Sports

"Three more," was the main cheer coming from the Northampton girls' locker room after the Konkrete Kids knocked off Liberty Tuesday night.

Coach Jeff Jacksits' crew played a "never-say-die" kind of game as the Kids finished strong to beat a good Liberty team, 57-45.

"It was a team effort," said Jacksits after his squad won its second straight Lehigh Valley Conference game to boost the Kids' LVC record to 4-6 with four league games remaining. They must win three of those to...

Kids hope to make duals

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

If there's any indication as to how tonight's District 11 seeding meeting will go for Northampton's wrestling team, all signs point to a positive direction heading into this weekend's district duals.

Sitting with a 6-6 overall record, Northampton should see themselves slide into the 3A tournament at Freedom, which takes place Friday and Saturday.

The kids are currently rated 10th overall, which is just enough to get them invited to the dance.

"I am excited for the this...

Making adjustments NHS junior Ryan Hudock trying to transition from JV team to varsity

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Northampton's Ryan Hudock recalled how he learned the game from his recently-graduated older brother, Jarryd, on their driveway.

"He taught me a lot of things about the game," said the younger Hudock of his older sibling, who played in the basketball program and graduated in 2011. "Playing on our driveway really helped me with my game today.

"With him (Jarryd) already at the high school level, I was able to realize what I needed to do to play at that level."

It was one...

Zach Valley wins first tournament

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Zach Valley admitted that he had mental blocks about his potential on the wrestling mat when it came to reaching the top.

The Northampton junior never won a high school tournament, despite taking third at both districts and regionals last year and fifth at states, Valley never had even reached a finals mat in high school.

That all changed last weekend, when Valley defeated Micah Hight of Caesar Rodney (Del.) with a 3-2 decision in the 120-pound finals to knock off the two-time...
