Kids look for a win

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

There's no question that a victory this week for Northampton's football team would lift a huge weight off the shoulders of the program.

Sitting at 0-4 following last week's 41-24 loss to Bethlehem Catholic, the continued struggles haven't evaporated, nor has it deteriorated the team's morale.

Not yet at least.

"I think a win would pick things up as far as morale and confidence," said head coach Jeff Brosky. "It would no doubt take pressure off and lift up our spirits and...

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by The Press in Sports

The Moravian College women's tennis team recently swept King's College 9-0 Saturday, Sept. 14, on the Hoffman Courts.

Freshmen Brittany Hodge (Bethlehem, Pa./Northampton) won 6-1, 6-2 at number-five singles.

"The freshmen are very impressive with what they're doing on the courts so far," head coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner said. "They're all working hard and this is going to be a very strong team looking forward to the future. This is the foundation of the future of this program...

Kids improve to 6-1 overall

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by GEORGE GEIGER Special to the Press in Sports

"I think we are living up to our expectations" is how Kelly Backenstoe rates her Northampton field hockey team.

The Konkrete Kids racked up two Lehigh Valley Conference shutouts this past weekend-blanking Dieruff 3-0 last Thursday and stopping Bethlehem Catholic 6-0 Monday.

With the twin shutouts Northampton is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the LVC and "we're starting to jell on defense," says Backenstoe.

"We have a lot of girls contributing (eight different girls have goals...

Jackson finishes seventh; girls take fourth

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in Sports

Hayley Jackson set what she thought was a reasonable goal heading in to Saturday's DeSales Invitational at DeSales University.

"Finishing in the top 25 was my goal coming in," an exuberated Jackson admitted.

She exceeded that goal by finishing seventh with a time of 20:27:11. She talked about how her progress altered her goal during the race.

"I felt really well and then I was thinking top ten. Then I told myself that I just want to medal. I was realizing that I was up...

Boys continue to play well

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by The Press in Sports

When asked to assess the boys soccer season as we sit at the halfway point Monday afternoon, coach Craig Carvin kept it simple.

"I want our team to make the LVC playoffs," he said. "I want our program to be top-four in the league.

"If we really want to make the leap and be an elite team in the district we have to get back to the league playoffs, and then do more in districts. I don't want to be one and done this year. We have to begin to do more work with the limited...

Pete's Top-10: Rovers still at 1

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

So what did we learn from week three? Whitehall can run with more than Saquon Barkley. Liberty can run the ball and Bethlehem Catholic can run with teams like Easton?

Becahi's 49-35 loss to Easton was probably the most surprising result from the weekend, as the Hawks continue to climb the poll. Nazareth fumbled and East Stroudsburg South clamped down the MVC title race.

What else can happen this week? Check out the poll below.

The Northampton varsity girls soccer team continued to work hard and battle on the field this week as they faced Dieruff and Bethlehem Catholic in two away contests that both ended in wins.

Northampton came out strong scoring a 9-0 victory. Leading the way for Northampton was senior...

Girls week up and down

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by WENDY KENNEDY Special to the Press in Sports

The Northampton girls varsity volleyball team served up some exciting contests this week.

After one nonconference game and two conference matchups, the girls maintained a 3-4 record overall and eventually picked up their first league win to improve to 1-4.

In their first game of the week against Pocono Mountain East at home on Sept. 10, Northampton dominated the court and took the win in three matches with scores of 25-8, 25-9, 25-16.

In that contest Anona Bauman had six...

Becahi next up for Kids

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Just when Northampton thought they had one week on the schedule to lighten the load, Bethlehem Catholic comes rolling into town with momentum.

The K-Kids dropped to 0-3 on the season following a 48-7 loss to Parkland last week. The Kids have faced the toughest three week gauntlet to start the season and it will continue this week at home (Nazareth) against Becahi (2-1).

The Golden Hawks earned more respect in one loss than in two wins, clawing their way to a 49-35 defeat...
