Kids come back to knock off Zephyrs

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It was a dose of revenge on one end and a tough pill to swallow on the other side.

Northampton squeaked out a five-game, 19-25, 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-10, victory over Whitehall Monday night to set themselves up closer to clinching a Lehigh Valley Conference playoff spot in volleyball.

Whitehall (6-5, 4-5) let a 2-0 lead slip out of its reach against the K-Kids, as Northampton (13-3, 9-2) won the final three games to pull out an important victory.

The win puts...

Boys still in search of District 11 berth

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

For Northampton head baseball coach Mick Sugra and his players, the message was simple this week; win two of their remaining three games to gain a District 11 Class 4A playoff berth.

While the message may be simple, the mission may be arduous.

The Konkrete Kids have struggled with consistent play on both side of the ball all season. They have endured their share of rashes of wildness on the mound, lack of timing hitting, and breakdowns on the field.

However, they will...

Girls win Remain unbeaten after 17 games this season

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by GEORGE GEIGER Special to the Press in Sports

Seventeen down and three to go!

That would be a good credo for Northampton's softball team.

The Konkrete Kids downed Liberty 3-1 Tuesday and clinched at least a tie for first place in the Lehigh Valley Conference's North Division.

Northampton's 17th-straight win moved the unbeaten K-Kids to 11-0 in the LVC with three games remaining - at Whitehall Thursday, at home with Parkland next Tuesday and at Nazareth next Thursday.

Where there's smoke, there's fire and the news of a Lehigh Valley superconference finally came to fruition last week.

After months of rumors and speculation about the future of the Lehigh Valley Conference, the Mountain Valley Conference stepped in and sent out an invitation to 12 neighboring schools to ultimately form a "big school, super conference," according to Stroudsburg Principal and MVC President Jeff Sodl.

All of the current LVC members, except for Bethlehem Catholic...

Lehigh, NHS' Boyko signs with the Raiders

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Billy Boyko has exams to deal with and a 15-page lab report due earlier this week. He probably can't wait for his senior year at Lehigh to be over because Boyko is set to fly to California in the coming weeks to participate in the Oakland Raiders offseason program.

The Raiders signed Boyko, a 6-foot-2, 239-pound linebacker, minutes after the NFL Draft commenced Saturday night.

"Five minutes after the draft, I got a call and the Raiders said they wanted to a deal," said Boyko. "...

Congratulations to the NAA Pixie Dolls on their opening day win against MTAA Pixie Stix.

Special recognition to Olivia Vooz, Ryleigh Tillotson, Carrie Peifly and Mia Davis-Luizer for their strong defense in the outfield. They held runners to singles due to their quick feet and hitting their cutoff fielders.

Great job to Chloe Peifly at catcher, Marissa Holzer, Madisyn Schubert, Erin Dumbach, and Lauren Mantz in the infield. Bryanna Bogden had her first hit in the Pixie League....

Wildcard race heats up

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

It's coming down to crunch time in the Lehigh Valley Conference volleyball season and the wildcard spot for the LVC playoffs is a hot item.

Both Whitehall and Northampton are fighting for that final spot, as well as Bethlehem Catholic, as teams enter their final four games of league play into the next week.

Northampton (11-3, 6-3), Whitehall (6-5, 6-3) and Bethlehem Catholic (7-3, 6-3) all share identical league records at the moment, but their fates will come into focus as key...

Kramer, Kids look for consistency

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Cody Kramer is confident his team can get to the postseason and make some noise. He has never been one short on confidence, desire and humility.

However, he also realizes his team could use some momentum to make ride easier along the way. Consistency has been a major hurdle for the Konkrete kids to overcome all season.

They began this week with an overall 8-7 record (5-5 Lehigh valley Conference) and a better-than-average chance to be playing baseball in mid-May. But Kramer...
