Wrestlers top Easton

The Northampton wrestling team claimed 3rd place at the EPC championships on Saturday with 42-26 win over Easton.

With both teams nursing some injuries and illnesses, there were a few matchup changes from the regular season dual meet with the Rovers just two weeks earlier.

The Northampton boys swimming and Diving team scored one point for Northampton in the Cement Belt Challenge this week with a narrow win over Whitehall while the girls were edged out, losing to the Zephs by just two points.

It was a hard-fought battle for both teams last Thursday night when Whitehall traveled to Northampton for a rival swim meet that both teams look forward to each year. Scores were very close all night but, in the end, the NHS boys won 92-91 and the girls lost 86-84...

Northampton’s girls’ basketball team has been waiting for this week.

Beginning Tuesday, the Konkrete Kids were looking to avenge previous losses this season to both Parkland and Nazareth. They also will face Allentown Central Catholic Monday to conclude their regular season before the East Penn Conference (EPC) and district playoffs.

The District 11 wrestling tournaments kick off this week with Thursday’s 3A action taking place at Liberty and Northampton.

Top-seeded Nazareth will wrestle at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night at Northampton against the winner of the eight-nine matchup between Easton and Emmaus. At the bottom of the bracket, second-seeded Northampton will kick off at the same time as Nazareth, where they’ll meet the winner of seventh-seeded Stroudsburg and tenth-seeded Blue Mountain.

The Northampton boys basketball team lost to Parkland 57-52 on Tuesday, ending the team’s 3-game winning streak. With two games left in the regular season, the K-Kids’ record is 12-8.

The Trojans found their range early, hitting a trio of three-pointers on their way to taking a 14-9 lead after the first quarter.

“You can say it, it was ugly,” admitted Northampton coach Jeff Jacksits when discussing his team’s 46-34 win over Parkland Tuesday night.

Both teams struggled to hit shots, especially early in the game, but Northampton found some semblance of offense in the second half to turn things around. The win clinched a spot in the EPC tournament for Northampton, upping its record to 17-3 overall and 11-3 in the EPC.

EPC wrestling championship set for Jan. 25

The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference announced the pairings for the wrestling championships.

The event will take place at Easton Area Middle School on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Cost for admission is as follows: adults $6, students $3, senior citizens $3.

Introductions will take place before the championship match.

Championship awards will take place after the championship match.

The East Penn Conference wrestling championship is slated to take place on Saturday at Easton Area Middle School.

The official pairings for the Saturday full slate of competition between each team in the conference won’t be decided until Thursday, but one matchup that appears to be a near certainty before pairings are released is the 7 p.m. championship bout between Bethlehem Catholic (8-0, 7-0) and Nazareth (11-1, 6-0).

On Friday night, the Northampton boys basketball team faced the top team in the EPC Mountain Division, East Stroudsburg South. The K-Kids held an 8-point lead at halftime, but ultimately fell 56-52.

Northampton was down 7-1 early in the game before scoring 12 points over the last 5 minutes of the first quarter to take a 13-11 lead at the end of the period.

The Northampton boys and girls teams fell to Southern Lehigh on Tuesday, Jan. 14, but the team ended the week on a higher note with a double victory over Allen on Thursday evening.

Northampton’s head coach Cullen Mentzell summed up Tuesday’s events.

“The meet went very well,” he said. “Even though we did not win we had a lot of swimmers continue to drop time.”
