District News: Book drive for food banks ends Friday

Northampton Community Task Force is holding a book drive throughout Northampton Area School District. The group is collecting new and like-new books, which will be donated to local food banks.

The drive will continue until March 1. Each school has a set goal.

George Wolf Elementary School: 6:30 p.m. March 5

Exchange Club honors seniors

At its Feb. 6 Northampton Exchange Club dinner meeting, members named three Northampton Area High School seniors as Students of the Month at a Service to Youth program, held at Northampton Banquet & Event Center, 1601 Laubach Ave.

Abigail Piotrowski, Michael Kistler Jr. and Andrew Cochrane were presented with the club’s Lamp of Knowledge plaque, a certificate of merit and a pen. The honorees will be entered into the essay contest for Student of the Year, with the theme selected by the National Exchange Club.

Inductees announced for 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award

Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation has announced this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award Wall of Honor inductees. Each of the seven Northampton Area High School graduates has achieved success in his or her chosen career or profession, while also having a positive impact on others through community service and/or volunteerism.

• Dr. Rodger Berg — Class of 1964; professor of science/chemistry at DeSales University, Muhlenberg College and Lehigh University; member/leader of professional chemistry organizations; community/church leader/volunteer

District News: Schools closed for holiday

Northampton Area School District will be closed Feb. 15 for the Presidents Day holiday.

Feb. 18 will be a makeup day for the snow, if needed.

Northampton Area High School’s PTSA group will meet 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the high school.

Northampton Area Middle School’s PTA group will meet 6 p.m. Feb. 12.

There will be a prom fashion show 7-8 p.m. Feb. 14 in the auditorium of Northampton Area High School.

New school district business administrator is appointed

A new Northampton Area School District business administrator has been appointed.

By a unanimous 9-0 vote at the Jan. 28 NASD Board of Education meeting, Matthew Sawarynski was appointed business administrator, effective July 1 through June 30, 2022, at an initial salary of $125,000.

Sawarynski, NASD assistant business administrator for three years, succeeds NASD Business Administrator Terry Leh, who is retiring this year.
