District News: Registration for NASD’s community education classes begins

Northampton Area School District’s spring 2019 community education classes are now open for registration. Classes will be at Lehigh Elementary School, Siegfried Elementary School, Northampton Area Middle School and Northampton Area High School.

Classes for the spring include Google, lap swim, guitar, water aerobics, Zumba, American Sign Language, cake decorating, country line dancing, painting, adult coed volleyball, quilting, men’s basketball and kiffle making.

NAHS library receives book written by Class of 2001 graduate

A book written by a Northampton Area High School graduate has been donated to the high school library.

“To Master the Boundless Sea: The U.S. Navy, the Marine Environment, and the Cartography of Empire” (2018, University of North Carolina Press) by Jason W. Smith is a nonfiction book about the rise of the U.S. Navy and the emergence of America as a sea power.

Smith, a NAHS Class of 2001 graduate, is an assistant professor of history at Southern Connecticut State University.

NASD receives Safe Schools funding

State Rep. Zach Mako, R-183rd, recently announced more than $64,000 in Safe Schools Targeted Grants were awarded to Northampton Area and Northern Lehigh school districts.

The grant program, funded through the state budget, assists schools with paying for programs to prevent and reduce violent incidents in schools, purchase safety- and security-related equipment and provide for the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers.

NASD school board approves two borough library trustees

Two trustees for Northampton Area Public Library’s board have been approved by Northampton Area School District Board of Education.

School directors voted unanimously 9-0 at the Dec. 17 meeting to approve, at the recommendation of the NASD administration, the appointment of Daniel Belletti, of Walnutport, and Jane Yagerhofer, of Bath, each to terms from Jan. 1, 2019, to Dec. 31, 2021.

In other business at the Dec. 17 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve:

ESL class shares multicultural Thanksgiving meal together

On Nov. 19, more than a dozen adult students gathered at Northampton Area High School’s library to celebrate their last English as a Second Language class with a multicultural Thanksgiving.

The Thanksgiving feast had a carved turkey, corn, mashed potatoes with gravy, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie provided by the district. Additional items provided by the students included falafel (deep-fried ball doughnut), tabbouleh salad, hummus, rice and beans, pastelillos (small turnovers), cabbage salad mixed with tomatoes, boiled yucca and Vigoron (pork rinds).

Students of the Month are named

Confidence and leadership are traits four Northampton Area High School seniors possess, as they were cited as Students of the Month by Northampton Exchange Club during its Service to Youth program Dec. 5 at Northampton Banquet & Event Center.

Recognized were Jenna Rogers, November Girl of the Month; Tyler Gilliard, November Boy of the Month; Abby Wheeler, December Girl of the Month; and Evan Gillette, December Boy of the Month.

The recipients were given a Lamp of Knowledge plaque, framed certificate and an Exchange Club pen.

District News: Northampton Area School District is closed Dec. 24-Jan. 2

Winter break for Northampton Area School District will be from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2, 2019. Schools will reopen Jan. 3, 2019.
