Police collect unused medications

Lehigh County police departments collected 944.5 pounds of unused and expired medications during the fifth annual National Take Back Day drug collection Sept. 29.

Medications were collected at 16 sites in Lehigh County. The total collected in the county during the last five events is 3,268.5 pounds.

At the most recent event, the Catasauqua Police Department collected 10 pounds of medications and the Whitehall Township Police Department collected 28.5 pounds.

Police respond

to break-in

Coplay Police began an active investigation into the break-in of the United States Post Office on Chestnut Street.

The break-in took place 6:04 a.m. Oct. 3. Police on Monday indicated nothing appears to be missing.

Police said those involved gained entry by smashing a side window.

Possible leak reported at Giant

A report of a possible gas leak Friday evening in the warehouse area of the Giant Food Store at Chestnut and Cherry streets brought borough police, the fire department and UGI to the scene.

· A theft from a vehicle brought officers to the 600 block of Fourth Street.

Catty K-9 unit aids in drug arrests

The Catasauqua Police Department's K-9 Unit assisted with the arrest of two men Oct. 2.

Alberto Mercedes, 47, of Homestead, Fla., and Jose Manuel Martinez, 58, of Houston, Texas, were charged with possession with intent to deliver 10 kilos of cocaine and a first-degree felony of conspiracy.

District Judge Robert C. Halal, who arraigned Mercedes and Martinez, denied them bail.

The two men were charged after an investigation was initiated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration New York Field Division and the DEA Allentown Resident Office.

Vehicle tires slashed

Coplay police on Sunday were called to the unit block of South Fourth Street to investigate a report of damage to a vehicle.

Police on arriving at the scene found two tires slashed on a neighbor's vehicle. The owner of the vehicle was not available at the time of the report, police stated.

The neighbor informed police he observed two tires slashed on his neighbor's vehicle while it was parked in front of his home.

Motorist charged for striking 5-year-old child at bus stop

A Whitehall Township motorist has been charged with recklessly endangering another person for striking a 5-year-old boy at a school bus stop in Whitehall Township.

Beverly A. Bell, 62, of 1 Maryland Circle, Apt. 238, also was charged Sept. 27 with summary offenses of careless and reckless driving, meeting or overtaking a school bus and driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.
