Don't get ticked off by summer's ticks

Tuesday, May 14, 2013 by BUD COLE Special to The Press in Focus

Summer weather will soon arrive. You might remember an ad, that went something like this: "Just when you think it's safe to go outdoors and enjoy the summer. ... "

This statement is similar to the advertisement for the movie "Jaws."

We do not have to worry about sharks in this area, but many people worry about poison ivy, ticks and biting insects as the air temperatures become warmer.

Although these plants and animals will be out there, it's no reason to stay indoors and...

THEATER REVIEW Civic's 'Next to Normal' is anything but

Tuesday, May 7, 2013 by PAUL WILLISTEIN in Focus

"Next To Normal" is certainly not your normal musical.

It defies the conventions of traditional Broadway fare in several ways.

"Next to Normal," through May 19, Civic Theatre of Allentown, has very few spoken words of dialogue. The story is advanced through songs 17 in act one and 20 (including five reprises) in act two, for a total of 37 production numbers.

This is about double the number of songs in a typical musical. "Chicago," for example, has 11 songs in act one and...
