Garden Club to meet Aug. 7

By now, you all should be enjoying your BLTs as your garden tomato crop overwhelms your backyard.

Take some time out for the Catasauqua Garden Club meeting on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. Sue Kittek, a Pennsylvania Master Gardener and garden columnist for the Morning Call, will share floral design and prep with the group. The Wednesday meeting will take place at the usual location, the Slovak Center Social Club, 1233 Fifth St., North Catasauqua.

Remember to have your display items in place by 12:45 p.m. Garden friendly visitors are welcome to attend.

Cut-A-Thon set for Aug. 18

A Locks of Love Cut-A-Thon will be held on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bethany Wesleyan Church Family Life Center, 675 Blue Mountain Drive, Cherryville.

Get a free haircut and help a child! Hair must fit into a ponytail that measures 10 inches or more in length.

New this year are haircuts, for a cost, for men and women, manicures, haircuts for children 12 and under.

UCC Country Festival this month

The annual Country Festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 17 from 3-9 p.m. at Christ United Church of Christ - Little Moore, 913 South Mink Road, Danielsville, off Route 946.

There will be live music, food and games for children and adults of all ages. A cakewalk is planned, along with a raffle with over 100 great prizes.

The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 18 from noon to 6 p.m.

Mr. Fritz Engler was born on the family farm in Washington Township, graduating from Bangor High School in 1970. There, he was a member of the wrestling squad.

"I especially enjoyed all my math courses," he says. After two years at Penn State University, Fritz took his mechanical skills to Hercules Cement now (Buzzi-Unicem) and was hired on March 20, 1970.

"I started on the labor gang at $3.25 an hour," he says. "My 41 years here have taken me into every area of the plant."

to dean's list

Samantha Upton of Coplay has been named to the University of Delaware's dean's list for the spring semester.

To meet eligibility requirements for the dean's list, a student must be enrolled full-time and earn a GPA of 3.33 or above (on a 4.0 scale) for the semester.

Hawk and Seyfried receive degrees

Coplay resident Victoria Hawk was one of 651 students to graduate from Messiah College May 18.

Hawk graduated cum laude with a degree in biology.

Buffet to be served Aug. 2

The Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company Country Garden will be holding an all-you-can-eat dinner buffet 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2.

The dinner will include soup, salad bar, rolls, side dishes, entrees and desserts. All proceeds benefit the fire company.

Bethany Wesleyan Church vacation Bible school will be held 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 5-9.

The Kingdom Rock program is for ages 3 to those entering kindergarten. The Soaking in the Son program is for children entering first grade through those who have completed fifth grade.

The Bath Farmers market is in full swing with 12 select producer-only members.

Upcoming themes are "peach party" Aug. 2 and "tomato fest." Aug. 9.

The market is open 3-7 p.m. Fridays at Keystone Park, with live music.
