Allentown's Oswald wins BASS sweepstakes

According to the popular BASS, a bass fishing organization, a local Allentown angler won its recent "Fish With Skeet" sweepstakes.

Douglas Oswald of Allentown entered the fishing sweepstakes close to 40 times when his name was recently drawn. When he got a call from BASS Membership Director Mitch Frank, he knew something was up.

"I was hoping that was what the call was about," said Oswald. "There aren't too many times when the membership director calls and asks you to call back. I was ecstatic."

The folks at Yamaha Outdoors say bowhunters should prepare now for the bow season, as it could take several months to get your gear and yourself in shape.

To get started, the following three "Ps" of bowhunting is a checklist of sorts to prevent poor performance. Of course for those who religiously participate in weekly 3D shoots, this advice is common practice. But if you don't shoot regularly, here are the three Ps for consideration.

With the July 4 holiday upcoming, would-be anglers have an opportunity to fish for free that day as part of the PA Fish & Boat Commission's second Fish-for-Free Day.

And if those anglers are really lucky and fish at the right place at the right time, they may latch onto one of Cabela's Fish for Millions contest fish that they are sponsoring along with the PF&BC.

Bass season kicks off

While it doesn't have the fanfare or crowds of the trout opener, bass season kicked off June 15 to a smaller cadre of anglers, but ones who are extremely dedicated to their species. The opener allows creeling fish however few anglers do, while wisely practicing catch-and-release.

Without a doubt, more angler money is spent on tackle, gear and boats for bass fishing than any other Pennsylvania fish species. The largemouth bass is king on local lakes while the smallmouth reins in rivers.

New species of bass found

If you're an avid bass fisherman, did you know there's a new species of black bass swimming in southeast waters according to the Outdoor Pressroom.

Scientists from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have discovered these new species while DNA testing a species found in Florida's Chipola River in 2007. The accompanying photo of the bass, that is destined to be called the "Choctaw bass" (more on that later), was collected from Florida's Holmes Creek in February 2012.

Be aware of tick bites

With anglers casting for trout along grassy-banked streams and woodlots, and spring gobbler hunters sitting in front of tree's, this makes them all susceptible to the dreaded tick bite.

Since we had a mild winter snow wise, ticks are already active and abundant and will readily attach themselves to sportsmen and sports ladies traipsing these areas. While they are a threat, outdoors folks shouldn't refrain from going afield if they take measures to prevent a tick bite and possible Lyme disease.
