Thursday, September 14, 2017 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

After a six-game winning streak put the Lehigh Valley IronPigs into the playoffs, a seventh straight win gave them a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five divisional series against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Unfortunately, that would be their last win of the season as the RailRiders went on to take the next three games to advance to the Governor’s Cup Finals in the International League.

Unfortunately for the Orioles, there wouldn’t be a comeback in the offing this time and they fell to Martins Creek 7-4, evening the series at one game apiece.

Northampton developed patience and did everything they could to take the District 11 quarterfinal from Emmaus last week. Unfortunately, early in the game, Northampton struggled to find a comfort zone, committing six errors in four innings as Emmaus jumped out to an 8-1 lead and then held on to win 8-5, advancing to the semifinals and ending the season for the Konkrete Kids.

Local umps get the call

Every year, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Reading Fightin’ Phils play an exhibition game for charity. Among all of the planning that goes into putting the game together is finding umpires to work the game. Minor League umpires aren’t allowed to work the game, so the teams generally turn to PIAA umpires. This year’s game was played at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, and when there is anything to do with umpiring, the IronPigs turn to Marty Ondrovic for help.

K-Kids stun Parkland

Wednesday, February 24, 2016 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Mistakes can often be fatal for a team in the playoffs.

On Friday night in Catasauqua, both Parkland and Northampton made their share of early mistakes, but both got themselves straightened. The result was Northampton picking up a 44-42 win over the Lady Trojans in the District 11 Quarterfinals game.

Parkland’s early nerves resulted in them turning the ball over on each of their first four possessions. They had a total of seven first quarter turnovers. The result of Northampton’s early jitters was foul trouble, with Sophia Eckroth picking up three first quarter fouls.
