Insurance agencies offer relief
A number of insurance companies are offering relief refunds that return money to customers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The relief comes from fewer drivers on the road, which means fewer accidents.
Liberty Mutual will return approximately $250 million to customers. Personal auto insurance customers will receive a 15-percent refund on two months of their premium, based on the premium amount as of April 7. The refund will be issued in the manner the most recent payment was made or by check.
Liberty Mutual will begin issuing refunds in the coming weeks, after receiving approval from state insurance regulators.
The refund will happen automatically, and customers do not need to call to get their refund. Liberty Mutual expects to begin issuing refunds by the end of April and will continue throughout May. For more information, visit libertymutual.com/covid-19.
Allstate Insurance is also giving back due to the decline in driving. They have announced the Allstate Shelter-in-Place Payback of more than $600 million in April and May for auto insurance customers.
In addition to the Shelter-in-Place Payback, Allstate is offering free identity protection, payment relief and extended coverage.
On average, Allstate personal auto insurance customers will receive 15-percent money back based on the monthly premium in April and May.
Allstate will automatically deposit money back to the bank or credit card account used for a customer’s most recent payment or apply credits to accounts. Customers should check their payment information to make sure it is up to date.

Allstate is also reducing personal auto insurance premiums this month by 25 percent on Farmers-branded and 21st Century-branded policies. This reduction is being made to reflect reduced driving in March and April. No action is needed from the customer, as the reduction will be applied automatically as a credit on an upcoming billing statement. If the account balance has been paid in full, a refund will be issued by check or to the credit/debit card or bank account on file.
For delivery drivers, Allstate is automatically extending coverage, for no additional charge, to customers with Farmers auto and motorcycle policies who have started making food, grocery, pharmacy and medical supply deliveries using their personal vehicles through April 30. Realizing many customers are currently experiencing hardships as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nationwide is offering a one-time premium refund of $50 per policy for personal auto policies active as of March 31. The premium refund and timing are subject to individual state regulatory approval.
If customers have experienced hardship due to COVID-19, Nationwide can suspend the cancellation of some policies, defer payment deadlines and waive some late fees. GEICO is providing a 15-percent credit to GEICO auto, motorcycle and recreational vehicle policyholders as the policy comes up for renewal. The credit will be applied to six-month policies renewing between April 8 and Oct. 7 and 12-month policies renewing between April 8 and April 7, 2021. The credit is part of the ongoing efforts to assist policyholders during this unprecedented time.
GEICO is also extending this credit to any new policies purchased between April 8 and Oct. 7.
GEICO expects credits to average about $150 per auto policy and $30 per motorcycle policy. They estimate the benefit to their 18 million auto and one million motorcycle policyholders to be approximately $2.5 billion.
Current policyholders can expect to see the credit when the policy renews. Customers do not need to take any action to receive this credit. GEICO has also paused cancellation of coverage due to nonpayment and policy expiration through at least April 30 or later as directed by the state. This pause is automatic for policyholders.
