Swimmers take care of ES South

Winter break this year did not include much rest the for the Northampton boys and girls varsity swimming and diving teams as the squad continued their training and even hosted a meet against East Stroudsburg South High School on Thursday evening, Jan. 2nd.

Both teams faired well in the contest with the boys team besting ESS by a score of 97-84 and the Women’s team claiming victory with a decisive 121-47 overall score.

Among the highlights of the evening for the girls were double, first-place finishes for senior Morgan Thomas, junior Sarah Hosking and sophomore Olivia Szerencsits. Thomas was first to the wall in the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:19.67 and the 100 freestyle event at 59.55.

Hosking claimed first with a district championship qualifying time of 2:17.03 in the 200 individual medley and achieved a second district qualifying time in the 100 backstroke at 1:03.51.

Szerencsits also achieved two district championship qualifying times in the 500 freestyle event with a first-place time of 5:27.33 and the 200 freestyle event with a first-place time of 2:02.91. Freshman Ava Gower also added to the list of first-place finishes for the girls team with a first in the 50 freestyle sprint with a time of 29.45.

In the relay events, the women’s relay team of Andrea Davidson, Allison Nemeth, Ava Gower and Morgan Thomas came in first in the 200 medley relay. Hosking, Szerencsits and Gower joined Hannah Nolan for a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay and Szerencsits and Nemeth teamed up with Isabella Grandia and Olivia Rigo to win the 400 freestyle relay.

On the boys team, junior Tommy Nichols claimed first place with two district championship qualifying times in the 200 individual medley event (2:09.06) and 100 backstroke (1:00.06). Roland Ambrose was first to the wall in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:38.13, Connor Oswald was first in the 100 breaststroke with a district champs qualifying time of 1:05.43 and Ben Christy claimed victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.06.

The relay team of Oswald, Christy, Roland and Nichols claimed one more victory for the boys with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

In boys diving, Northampton added to the team’s points claiming first, second and third place for a total of 13 points by divers Brad Chatenka, Seth Janders and Boden Burkhart respectively.

Northampton head coach Cullen Mentzell seems pleased with the progress of team and the new faces that continue to add points to the team totals and achieve first place finishes in individual and relay events.

“Now that the season is in full swing it is great to see some of our newer swimmers doing well,” said Mentzell. “On the boys side Ambrose Roland won the 500 against ESS - this is his first year swimming. On the girls side Ava Gower and Andrea Davidson are new to the team and have been very consistent in whatever events I put them in.”

Northampton looks forward to Dieruff for their next home meet at the Gwen L. Whildin Natatorium on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 4 p.m.
