Community education approved for 2019-20 school year

Even though it’s the midst of summer, the Community Education Program in Northampton Area School District is being planned for the fall.

The Northampton Area School District Board of Education voted unanimously 9-0 at the July 15 meeting, at the recommendation of the administration, to approve the program with Sandra Bischof continuing as program coordinator for the 2019-20 school year.

The vote included approval of anticipated classes, instructors and stipends. Community education classes are not held during the summer when district schools are closed.

Classes, instructors or facilitators where applicable and locations for the fall classes are:

• Beginner country line dancing, Brian McNeal, Siegfried Elementary School, multipurpose room

• Adult men’s open basketball, Ron Gabryluk, Siegfried Elementary School, gymnasium

• Guitar I and II, Paul Demarest, Northampton Area Middle School, room 245

• Open quilting, Eugenia Emert, Northampton Area High School, room 1175

• Lap swim, NAMS, natatorium

• Water aerobics, Susan Roberts, NAMS, natatorium

• Family yoga, Jennifer Csordas, Siegfried Elementary School, multipurpose room

• Yin Yang yoga, Beth Sweetana, Siegfried Elementary School, multipurpose room

In other business at the July 15 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve, at the recommendation of the administration, the hiring of several new employees.

A three-year contract was approved with Michael Renner, school police officer with Northampton Area School District Police Department, at an initial $41,000 annually, July 1-June 30, 2022.

Also approved was Michael Papay, special education emotional support teacher, NAMS, effective Aug. 19, or upon release from present employer and pending receipt of proper documentation, at $75,422 annually with benefits; Michael Gurdineer, social studies teacher, NAMS, effective Aug. 19, pending receipt of proper documentation, at $67,888 annually with benefits; Lindsay Fetterhoff, elementary teacher, Lehigh Elementary School, effective Aug. 19, pending receipt of proper documentation, at $53,555 annually with benefits; Devin Hallquist, autistic support teacher, NAMS, effective Aug. 19, pending receipt of proper documentation, at $56,610 annually with benefits; Jessica Lopez, special education 1:1 instructional assistant, NAMS, effective Aug. 19, at $13.89 per hour with benefits; Rachel Fackenthall, long-term substitute fourth-grade elementary teacher, Siegfried Elementary School, effective Aug. 19 through the first semester of the 2019-20 school year, at $280.61 per diem; Jacob Hunsberger, special education instructional assistant, NAMS, effective Aug. 19, at $13.07 per hour with benefits; and Douglas Matz, study hall instructional assistant, NAHS, effective Aug. 19, at $15.52 per hour with benefits.

School directors also voted 9-0 to approve the resignation of Joshua May, special education teacher at NAMS; the resignation of Ricky Knecht, school district police officer; revised job descriptions for the athletic director, assistant to the athletic director, athletic office secretary, head coach and assistant coach; support staff transfers effective with the 2019-20 school year; the revised list of teachers, nurses and 1:1 instructional assistants to provide extended school year and Chapter 15-Section 504 services for the summer; and secondary and elementary school handbooks for the 2019-20 school year.

The NASD Board of Education resumes its twice-monthly meetings in August. The board meets 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12 and 6:30 p.m. Aug. 26 in the meeting room at the administration building, 2014 Laubach Ave., Northampton.
