Dieruff: ‘Once on This Island’
“Once on This Island” brings the tropics to the stage, 7 p.m. April 25, 26, and 2 and 7 p.m. April 27, auditorium, Dieruff High School, 815 N. Irving St., Allentown.
Based on the novel “My Love, My Love: or, The Peasant Girl” by Rosa Guy, the musical tells the story of a kind-hearted peasant girl living on a Caribbean island and her attempts to bring different social classes together through the power of love.
“This is a production you will not want to miss,” says Sarah Pastelyak, who produces and directs the Dieruff production, assisted by assistant director Nicholas Conti, choreographer Joanellyn Schubert, vocal director Jennifer Dodd, set designer and stage manager Deborah Hamburger, and assistant producer and set foreman Donald Hinkle.
With music by Stephen Flaherty and book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, the musical opened on Broadway in 1990, receiving eight Tony Award nominations. The 2017 Broadway revival was nominated for eight Tony Awards, receiving one Tony Award.
“We Dance,” “Mama Will Provide,” “Human Heart” and “Why We Tell the Story” are among the featured songs.
