Library holds Oreo-tasting event
Northampton Area Public Library held an Oreo-tasting competition Sept. 19 as an after-school activity. Rachel Robinson, the young adult coordinator at the library, put together the fun activity for students to get to know each other outside the classroom. The event was for teens in grades 6 through 12.
“We try to have one special program a month for teens,” Robinson said.
Clubs for different interests, such as anime and gaming, meet in the library after school to discuss special topics. These special programs are a great way for the clubs’ members to come together.
For this activity, students stood around a table with plates of Oreos labeled 1-11. Papers were handed out with blank lists for students to write down their guesses on which Oreo flavor was which. Their guesses were based on look, taste and smell.
Anthony Hazard won the contest with the most correct guesses — 8 out of 11.
The featured flavors were golden vanilla, mint, original chocolate, lemon, cherry cola, red velvet, kettle corn, pina colada, apple pie, salted caramel and coconut cream.
The students had a blast at the event and picked out their favorite flavors. Event winner Hazard and Natalie F. preferred the red velvet cookies. Natalie said it tasted just like her favorite red velvet desserts. Cora M. and Sky B. said the mint Oreo was their favorite featured flavor. Cora said it tasted like the Thin Mint Girl Scout cookie. Kylie M. enjoyed the salted caramel Oreo. Alexander B. and Barrett R. kept it classic and preferred the regular chocolate Oreo as their favorite. Alexander said he is not a fan of the funky flavors.
There will be an Anime Manga Club meeting 4-5 p.m. Nov. 7, and the Teen Gaming Club meets 3-4 p.m. Nov. 28. The library is also hosting a soap-making event for teens 3-4 p.m. Nov. 14.
