Volleyball gets a win

The Northampton Konkrete Kids girls volleyball team evened their record on the season at 3-3 following a straight-set, 25-18, 25-14, 25-14 home win over Pocono Mountain East.

The Kids struggled to separate themselves early in the first set, allowing the Cardinals to hang around at 19-15 before Lindsey Nemeth finally closed it out with a service ace.

The second and third sets were never in doubt as the Kids’ held leads of 16-9 and 16-5 on the strength of their superior serving and athletic dominance in the front row. Junior captain Brooke Rockovits led the offense with 11 kills and senior captain Abby Franke chipped in eight of her own.

The win gave Northampton its first winning streak of the season, coming on the heels of a 25-11, 25-7, 25-1 thrashing of Catasauqua the night before. Each win is precious if the Kids are going to qualify for the postseason.

Because of the unbalanced schedule imposed by the EPC divisional set up, they have eight intra-divisional games, out of 18 total, against teams that are contenders to reach the state tournament. Although the schedule is daunting, head coach Jessica Finlayson does see the positive from playing against elite competition.

“I’m glad that we play all of the very talented teams because it makes my athletes better in the long run,” she said

That kind of perspective suits a team that has only three seniors on the varsity roster. Finlayson also spoke highly of the contributions that she is receiving from the younger players and wants to see if one of them will emerge as a future leader.

“I have Mya Cascario, who’s been playing all the way around right side as a sophomore and one of my middles (Alexa Barowski) is a sophomore and one of my outsides (Lindsey Nemeth) is a sophomore,” she said. “All three of them are very solid players, they work very hard and I’m sure that in the next two years they will do big things.”

Next the Kids will travel to Stroudsburg on Thursday to face the 3-3 Mounties before hosting the Konkrete Kid Invite in Schneider Gymnasium on Saturday. After that will come a chance to pull an upset over the state ranked Liberty Hurricanes in Bethlehem on Monday the 24th.
