Board approves Kuhns as new assistant curriculum director

Northampton Area School District Board of Education voted unanimously 9-0 at the March 26 meeting to approve a new assistant director of curriculum.

Dr. Lori Kuhns, NASD assistant director of curriculum, will be promoted, effective July 1, at $120,418 annually, with benefits. Kuhns is principal of Lehigh Elementary School.

In other business at the March 26 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve:

Athletic coaching staff member and stipend for the 2017-18 school year: Alan Hartzell, assistant softball coach, $1,956;

Lauren Ezzell, paid childbearing leave of absence, May 24 through last teaching day, 2017-18 school year, unpaid FMLA child rearing leave, Aug. 20-Nov. 13, with insurance and unpaid child rearing leave, without insurance, November through the 2018-19 school year;

Laura McHugh, unpaid leave of absence, March 5-29;

Stephanie Smith, special education 12-month secretary, effective April 3, at $16.92 per hour;

Extracurricular staff members and stipends for the 2017-18 school year: Ryan Brobst, Innovative Leadership Club, NAHS, $100, and Edward Seidick, Innovative Leadership Club, NAHS, $100;

Summer school instructors and their reimbursements, June 18-July 26;

Amie Marks, teacher, and Jozette Kitzhoffer, parent, to attend Pennsylvania Junior Science Fair State Competition, along with two students, May 20-22, State College, at $1,020, included in the board-approved 2017-18 curriculum budget;

2016-17 audit report prepared by local auditors, Gorman & Associates, P.C.; and

Expulsion hearing waiver for high school student No. 2017-01.

At the March 12 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve:

Corissa Strohl, paid childbearing leave of absence, May 2-June 7, and unpaid FMLA child rearing leave, Aug. 20-Sept. 7, with insurance;

Mark Keeler, unpaid leave of absence, April 20-May 4;

Resignation of Frederick Muschko, cafeteria monitor and traffic duty, Northampton Area Middle School, effective last student day of the 2017-18 school year;

Resignation of Juliann Maurek as assistant softball coach, effective March 1;

Athletic coaching staff members and stipends for the 2017-18 school year;

Nicholas Huber, Tuesday-Saturday maintenance I, effective March 12, at $24.82 per hour, with benefits;

Alex Heckman, short-term substitute special education teacher, Moore Elementary School, retroactive to Feb. 26 through the 2017-18 school year, at $125 per day;

Voluntary transfer of Robin Sperlbaum, Tuesday-Saturday custodian, Siegfried Elementary School, to Tuesday-Saturday custodian, Moore Elementary School, effective March 13, with no change in base salary;

Adoption of revised policy and attachments, effective March 13: Title I parent and family involvement;

Camp Invention and invention project summer enrichment programs, June 18-21. Student cost for four-day STEM programs is $145 for grades 3-5 students and $165 for grades 6-8 students. The reduced prices are possible through a contribution from Northampton Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation. There is no cost to NASD for the programs;

Northampton Area School District facilities study, dated March 2018, submitted to Pennsylvania Department of Education as part of PlanCon, and submission of PlanCon parts A (project justification) and B (schematic design) to PDE for approval;

Award base bid of $82,635 to replace sidewalks at Northampton Area High School along Laubach Avenue and alternate bid No. 1 of $13,800 to add concrete in three driveway islands along Konkrete Lane to Bertolet Construction Corporation, Wernersville, for $96,435;

Award bid to replace approximately 100 upright fire sprinkler heads in attic of Siegfried Elementary School to Guy M. Cooper Inc., Willow Grove, for $195,000;

2018-19 Northampton Community College educational and support budget of $60,103,113 with NASD contribution of $797,013; and

Neil Koch, NASD representative to BAVTS authority, Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2022.
