NHS cheering third

Tuesday, November 21, 2017 by Katie McDonald kmcdonald@tnonline.com in Sports

Northampton cheerleaders took third place at the Central Daughin Cheerleading Competition on Nov. 4.

“We have a young team, only three seniors out of 16, and we have so much room to grow and keep improving,” said Northampton coach Lauren Sniscak. “Some never competed before, so it was the first time for them to be in front of judges and a big crowd.”

The KKids were only .5 points behind second place, but a faulty pyramid in their routine was mostly to blame.

“It didn’t hit the way we wanted it to. It was disappointing, but I don’t foresee that happening again,” Sniscak said. “They love their dance [to That’s My Girl], and they like the cheer a lot. It’s fun and exciting.”

The Kids were awarded for overall best dance.

Sniscak and assistant coach Kayla Bringenberg put the routine together.

Northampton’s cheerleading squad is Cassondra Berger, Renee Dayoub, Kirsten DiBucci, Mckenna Doyle, Taylor Fegley, Makenzie Fritz, Emma Liebert, Ashley Moore, Rylee O’Donnell, Hannah Paukovits, Melissa Ricca, Gianna Saloum, Hope Schoeneberger, Marina Schrap, Madison Shehab, and Arianna Troxell.

O’Donnell, Moore, and Fritz are senior captains.

“Their job is to keep a positive vibe within the team, encouraging everyone to do their best, bring ideas to the table. They make a good unit and get along very well,” said Sniscak.

After two more competitions, one at Nazareth and one at Southern Lehigh, the KKids will compete at the East Penn Conference Cheerleading Competition in December and the District XI Cheerleading Competition in January.

“Northampton cheerleading never made it to states, so that is definitely my goal and theirs. It’s really about execution. It could be as hard or as easy as the team wants it to be, but we have to hit,” Sniscak said.
