Two runners head to states

Northampton High School runners Magen Perelli and Georgia Wiswesser qualified for states after competing in the District XI Cross Country Championships last Wednesday at Bethlehem Municipal Course.

“The past two years I’ve gotten very close [to states]. This year I started training a lot earlier since this was my goal since June. I just think I had a better mindset overall this season,” Perelli said.

Perelli, a junior, placed 15th at districts with a time of 20:47.

“Having Georgia in front of me pushes me a lot if I can see her. Around the second mile, there was a girl in red and a girl from Emmaus, probably about three steps ahead of me, and [Coach Dan Benner] told me that if I didn’t get the girl from Emmaus, I wasn’t going to states, so that was a pretty good incentive to pass her,” said Perelli.

Wiswesser, a freshman, placed seventh at districts with a time of 20:11.

“It was my goal to stay up with Amber [Poniktera] and Magen in the beginning,” said Wiswesser. “There was an Emmaus girl right next to me coming up the little hill at the end, and I just wanted to pass her, so that was big motivation for me.”

Benner communicated well with the K-Kids throughout the race.

“He was probably around every corner, and he’s very good about telling us who we need to get, what place they’re in, what our time is. That’s usually a very good incentive,” Perelli said.

Also competing in the girls’ race were Beth Albright who completed the race in 21:44, Hannah Flaven who finished in 22:31, Lauren Pague whose time was 23:16, and Olivia Rigo whose time was 23:49.

In girls’ team results, Easton placed first, and Northampton placed sixth.

In boys’ team results, Easton placed first, and Northampton placed 12th.

Competing in the district boys’ race for Northampton were Vince Gallagher with a time of 18:20, Evan Gillette with a time of 18:50, Owen Nahf with a time of 18:58, Sam Arnold with a time of 19:48, Matt Heisler with a time of 20:06, Wyatt Poniktera with a time of 20:22, and Nic Quinones with a time of 20:43.

The PIAA State Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Nov. 4 in Hershey.
