The Northampton girls soccer team secured a district playoff appearance with two additional wins last week against Allentown Central Catholic and Southern Lehigh.

The later part of a division, heavy schedule presented a tough challenge for the girls.

Leading up to this week, head coach Chaz Saul explained, “We need a win or a tie to make it to districts but the rest of our games are all division games and it’s going to be extremely hard.”

As it turned out, the team made it look easy with 2-1 wins over both division opponents.

On Friday, Oct. 6, Northampton faced Allentown Central Catholic in an away game at the Lehigh County Fields in South Whitehall. Northampton scored first with one goal in the first half. Two additional goals would come in the second from both teams, putting the final score at Northampton 2-1.

A frequent scorer for Northampton, Abi Czarnecki added another goal to her long list of scores this season. Czarnecki was also credited with an assist for a total of three points in this game. Teammate Isabella Nota also joined in the scoring fun this game with one goal and an assist of her own. Goalkeeper Gabby Demchak kept the score close with a total of six saves this contest.

On Saturday, Oct. 7, Northampton welcomed Southern Lehigh for a 3 p.m. home game. The game was a slow starter with no score in the first half of play. Action picked up in the second half with scores by Northampton’s Alexandra Benedict and Czarnecki. Czarnecki and Rebekkah Galicki also had assists this game. Goalkeeper Demchak had a great game, allowing only one goal out of seven shots from Southern Lehigh.

“It’s been years since we’ve been in this position,” said Saul.

What started as a rebuilding year has launched into a season to remember as the girls team heads into the final week of their schedule at 10-5-1 overall. Northampton is currently ranked fourth in the East Penn Conference Skyline Division.

Northampton travels to Nazareth on Thursday, Oct. 12, for a 7 p.m. matchup, the final contest of Northampton’s regular season.
