Kids look to avenge two golf losses

Wednesday, September 20, 2017 by Scott Pagel spagel@tnonline.com in Sports

The Northampton golf team fell to Emmaus in a very close game last week. Despite falling to 13-2 as a result of the loss, their district hopes are up in the air at this point.

“We just lost a heart breaker to Emmaus by four strokes,” said head coach Brian Davies. “At this point, I am not sure if we can make districts as a team. Our goal is place top-three at the league championships coming up Sept. 26. I am hoping we can cobble together four scores that will win the whole thing.”

Junior Andrew Hozza keeps shooting in the 70s consistently with room to grow yet, according to Davies. Jack Test, a senior, is looking to go out with a bang and score well at leagues and individual districts.

Senior Kate Gogel and junior Jess Bretzik will be competing for the ladies championship at both leagues and districts, Davies though.

“Our team goal is to try and beat the two teams that beat us during the season at leagues,” Davies said about Emmaus and Liberty. “It will not be easy as both teams are very strong and well coached. However, Woodstone C.C. is our house and we need to protect our house.”

Despite two, disappointing losses this year, Davies is pleased with the way his team as played so far this season.

“Overall, I am happy with the way the season unfolded, we lost two huge matches but never stopped competing,” Davies said. “The junior trio of Anthony Sawarynski, Devon Britton and Andrew Kovalchik all saw their averages lower this year and have become steady, middle of the rotation players and sophomore Nate Wheeler has put in the time and work to get his average down to the 80s.”
