Nero plays: Peter Nero, above, will tickle the ivories for "Peter Nero's Broadway," 8 p.m. June 14, State Theatre Center for the Arts, 453 Northampton St., Easton. Nero will be accompanied by Michael Barnett, his principal bassist for 18 years. The evening includes Cole Porter's "Night and Day"; Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Memory," and a medley of songs from Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story." Nero founded the Philly Pops, for 35 years directed Peter Nero and the Philly Pops and is its artistic director. Nero, regarded as one of the premier interpreters of Gershwin, starred in the Emmy-Award winning NBC Special, "S'Wonderful, S'Marvelous, S'Gershwin" and performed with the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., in the July 4th special, "A Capitol Fourth." Inside the SSFF box: "Me + Her," above, is one of the animated shorts in "Animation Block 1," a series of shorts being screened at the 11th annual Southside Film Festival (SSFF), through June 14 in Bethlehem. In director Joseph Oxford's 10-min. stop-motion animated film, Jack and Jill of Cardboard City are separated by Jill's torrid illness. Jack must think "outside the box" to ensure they will be together again. There are two animation blocks, three documentary blocks, three drama blocks, one comedy block and one miscellaneous block at SSFF 2014. Approximately 75 films from around the world will be shown at four venues: Godfrey Daniels, 7 E. Fourth St.; Broughal Middle School, Brodhead and Morton streets; Sinclair Lab Auditorium, Lehigh University, Asa Drive, off Packer Avenue, and Victory Firehouse, Columbia and Webster streets, all southside Bethlehem.
