Boys fall to Parkland

Thursday, April 3, 2014 by WENDY KENNEDY Special to the Press in Sports

The Northampton boys volleyball team took on league rival Parkland on Tuesday, April 1, in a home game.

The Trojans would begin the game not only with an undefeated record, but fresh off of two decisive shutouts. Meanwhile, the Kids entered with a 2-0 record as well and were looking to keep up their winning ways.

The boys, led by returning starters Mike Holihan, Josh Palenchar and Josh Morgan, played a tough game to open the contest and won the first match by a score of 26-24.

But, despite Northampton's best efforts, Parkland would win the next three matches by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-17. And, in the end, Parkland won the contest to move to 3-0 while handing Northampton its first loss of the season.

The league loss brings the team's mark to a 2-1, but with much optimism for the 2014 season ahead of them.

Head coach Doug Fehnel started the year with three returning players, four newcomers and ambitions of achieving league and district playoffs. The team has been focusing on working together and Fehnel has high hopes for a strong 2014 season.

"They are great kids," said Fehnel. "They are really starting to buy into defense."

That was a critical weapon in their recent game against Parkland and will continue to be vitally important to the team's success as they prepare to take on Nazareth on Thursday, April 3.

The boys team will take to the road for a league matchup against Emmaus (7 p.m. on April 8) before returning home to host Dieruff on April 10.
