Kids have strong showing at District 11 swim meet
The Northampton girls and boys varsity swim team sent 14 swimmers to the PIAA District 11 AAA Championship meet which was held Feb. 28-March 2.
The Northampton teams had a strong showing including 17 individual events and 5 relays.
Among the highlights of the championship meet was the Northampton boys 200 yard freestyle relay team which was comprised of seniors Cory Ninos, Ben Longacre, Joey Szerencsits and Kyle Iasiello. The team took fourth place in the event with a time of 1:31.70. In the 400 freestyle relay, Ninos, Szerencsits and Iasiello teamed up with senior Nick Pavlacka to take sixth place in the event with a time of 3:26.16.
The Northampton girls team showed their own relay strength with the team of seniors Emma Steirer, Madison Bernal, Paige Knouse and sophomore Rachael Pursell. The girls took seventh place overall in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.39 and eighth place overall in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:51.70.
Northampton's senior sprinters competed in the 50 freestyle where Knouse placed eighth with a time of 25.53. Longacre and Iasiello placed 10th and 11th in the boys 50 free with times of 23.03 and 23.22 respectively. Longacre also competed in the 100 breaststroke, posting an eighth place finish in 1:07.78 while Pavlacka and Ninos posted 10th and 11th place finishes in the 100 backstroke.
Freshman Michael Bauer placed 22nd in his first district championship appearance in the boys 100 freestyle event.
Swimming in the 100 butterfly events, Bernal claimed an eighth place finish with a time of 1:02.37 while freshman Gavyn Frankenfield and sophomore Steton Weber placed 14th and 15th for the boys with times of 58.24 and 58.39. Rounding out the 100 yard events, Pursell and senior Steirer placed 11th and 20th in the girls 100 backstroke.
Northampton's distance swimmers also had a strong meet, with Szerencsits and Bernal placing 12th and 13th in their respective 200 freestyle events. In the 200 medley, Pursell and Steirer placed 12th and 16th for the girls. Weber, Frankenfield and junior Kaden Chambers placed 16th, 19th and 20th in the boys medley.
In the grueling 500 freestyle events, Northampton's boys posted 13th and 14th place finishes with Szerencsits at 5:10.31 and Chambers just seconds behind at 5:13.41. Representing the girls team, sophomore Annalise Christy posted a 16th place finish with a time of 5:39.29.
The 2014 PIAA Swimming and Diving Championship meet will be held at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium from March 11-15.
