The Northampton girls and boys varsity swim team bested East Stroudsburg South in a home meet on Saturday, Feb. 1.

The Northampton team claimed their victories by scores of 136-39 in the girls meet and 120-58 in the boys.

The girls team posted first place finishes in every event in Saturday's meet including relay team wins in the 200 yard freestyle relay, the 400 yard freestyle relay and the 200 yard medley relay. Northampton swimmers Rachel Pursell, Madison Bernal and Paige Knouse composed a triple threat for Northampton as they each claimed first place in two events. Purcell led the Northampton sweep in both the 200 yard freestyle event (where Pursell swam a 2.08.10) and the 100 yard backstroke with a winning time of 1:04.56.

Bernal, likewise, led the Northampton sweep of the 100 yard freestyle with a winning time of 58.30, and claimed victory in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:31.97.

Sprinter Paige Knouse also posted multiple first place wins with a lightning-fast, first place time of 25.97 in the 50 yard freestyle and a 1:05.31 win in the 100 yard butterfly event.

Rounding out Northampton's winning times were Annalise Christy with first place win of 1:22.77 in the 100 yard breaststroke and Emma Steirer who took first place in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:57.90.

The boys team also gave an impressive performance in Saturday's meet by posting first place wins in every event.

Kid swimmers Joey Szerencsits and Kyle Iasiello both claimed first place in two events - Szerencsits in the 200 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle with times of 1:58.71 and 5:18.18 respectively, and Iasiello in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle with times of 23.77 and 52.47 respectively.

Other strong performances by the boys included a 100 yard Backstroke win by Cory Ninos (1:01.61), a win in the 100 yard breaststroke event by Ben Longacre (1:13.58), Gavyn Frankenfield's victory in the 100 yard butterfly (1:00.78) and Steton Weber's first place finish in the 200 yard individual medley. Ninos, Weber, Longacre, Szerencsits, Iasiello and Kaden Chambers all played a role in Northampton's relay wins. The Kids placed first in the 200 yard freestyle relay, the 400 yard freestyle relay and the 200 yard medley relay.

Adding to the strength of the Northampton girls and boys teams this year are Northampton's four competitive divers. The team's divers include Alexis Frey, Selina Cartagena, Ben Longacre and Josh Millan. Enabling Northampton to compete in the diving portion of the varsity swim meets helps secure additional points for the team. In Saturday's meet, Northampton's divers secured an additional 114.85 points for the girls varsity team and 114 points for the boys.

At press time, the Northampton varsity swim team was preparing for their next contest against Whitehall at home on Thursday, Feb. 6.
