Traffic crossing the Coplay-Northampton Bridge into Northampton during the late afternoon and early evening rush hour has not abated.

Although PennDOT a few months ago agreed to reprogram the traffic signal at Ninth and Main streets in Northampton to reduce backups, traffic continues to be problematic.

The same issue exists for commuter traffic on Main Street, where motorists get stuck at the traffic light, waiting to turn left onto the bridge and into Coplay.

At the traffic light at Second and Chestnut streets in Coplay, backups on Second Street for vehicles waiting for the light have not been a major issue.

The question remains, however, could PennDOT have remedied the situation with a green arrow at the Ninth and Main streets in Northampton?

Some say the problem for drivers turning north onto Main from the bridge is the traffic streaming down the Ninth Street hill in Northampton, which then turns right onto Main.

Lower weight limits imposed for trucks on the Coplay-Northampton Bridge has aided in reducing congestion problems.

Fortunately, traffic in Coplay is not as bad as elsewhere in the region.
